Herkimer Diamond Mining Adventure!
This past Friday - Sunday my lil family and I went Herkimer Diamond mining in upstate NY. This is something I've been wanting to do for decades and now that our kiddo is obsessed with Minecraft, it felt like the perfect adventure. (Herkimer Diamonds are water-clear quartz, often double terminated, they are considered the best in the world and they're just 4 hours away!)
Would we find anything? Would we get attacked by Piglins? Would Jack Black save us if we did?
We stayed in an adorable rustic cabin at the KOA literally right next to their mine. It had a pull out futon and bunk beds, bathroom with a shower, mini kitchen with 2 burners, a grill outside and a fire pit. It was so great to be adventuring but to also be comfortable. It rained in the morning but then cleared up to a beautiful hot day on Saturday and we even cooled off in the pool on site. The food there was pretty good and the gift shop offered all the extras.
Within just a few minutes of looking on the ground, I found this little Herk! Cracking rocks open was fun at first but also hard work. It was cool to just be able to find some in plain sight. Unfortunately soon after this pic, our lil guy smashed his finger. We were glad to be able to take a break at our cabin to ice it. Then we went back out for more.
People really go to work on the rock wall and dig little caves to find more crystals, not easy at all! I spent more time seeing what caught my eye from the sun's reflection.
I brought it to my husband and he cracked the rock open. I took a video and then screenshot the exact moment the crystal popped out, you can see it falling from the hole. Teamwork!
It's so important to make time to play! I'm so glad we took this little trip. This also made me have even more appreciation for the crystals and stones that I purchase and all the work that goes into collecting them.
On Sunday we drove to Crystal Grove to try their mine. We had equal luck here, finding another small handful of crystals. They carry 永 jewelry in their shop and it was fun to visit my work there.
Here's our haul of our best pieces from both mines. Leo's keeping them in his treasure chest, well earned! We stopped in Saratoga for lunch and made it back in time to unpack and get ready for the week ahead. I highly recommend making a weekend of it, great memories were made!
I've been working with Herkimer Diamonds forever but I do buy them already drilled. Find them HERE.
